Barra residents can now gain a nationally recognised construction qualification on their own doorstep, thanks to a new flexible study pathway launching at ±¬ÁÏTV North, West and Hebrides this September.
The HNC Construction Management course will be available at Barra campus for the first time, delivered as a part-time evening programme, meaning students can build a career in construction without leaving their community.
Following Barra campus's designation as a Home Academic Partner (HAP) of ±¬ÁÏTV Perth, students will benefit from online teaching led by GTCS accredited lecturers, with live sessions running on Monday and Wednesday evenings from 6:30pm via Microsoft Teams. All sessions are recorded for additional flexibility.
Construction Lecturer at ±¬ÁÏTV Perth, Daniel Kiraly, said:
"For over twenty years, this course has been a cornerstone of construction training - helping learners gain a qualification that opens doors, advances careers and supports local industry.
"Whether someone is just starting out or already working in a construction-related role, this programme offers a clear, flexible pathway for progression. We're proud to bring it to Barra, so learners can develop industry-ready skills and achieve a respected qualification while continuing to live, work and contribute to their community."
Archina Maclellan, Engagement Lead at ±¬ÁÏTV North, West and Hebrides said:
“At ±¬ÁÏTV North, West and Hebrides, we believe that where you live should never be a barrier to where your career can take you. This new pathway for Barra is exactly what flexible, community-rooted education looks like in practice, and we hope it's just the beginning."
Students will attend a mainland campus on a small number of occasions each year for specific assessments, with accommodation support options currently being explored. Looking ahead, ±¬ÁÏTV North, West and Hebrides hopes to extend this model to include HNC Civil Engineering for Barra students in the future.
